is to enhance girls education and economic empowerment while assisting their local communities in gaining market access. Our farmers have agreed to take childhood marriage, female genital cutting and school withdrawal off the table – effectively what we call “The Farmer’s Pledge”. By doing this, we ensure signatory Farmers gain international market access whilst each girl is seen as an equal.
By working with us on all stages from soil management through to exportation, we‘re ensuring that Somali girls secure their futures and become formidable banana traders and shareholders.

Maryan has a career spanning across two decades working in international law, trade and development. She is the youngest woman ever appointed as a Chief Trade Negotiator to the World Trade Organization (WTO). She has been recognised by the Biden/Harris administration, the Obama Foundation and 10 Downing Street for her transformative work in Africa, Europe and the US. She was instrumental in Somalia’s post-war recovery between 2016-2020 and reinstated the Office of the Legal Adviser after 26 years of absence.
Maryan Co-Founded and Co-Chaired the Harvard Trade Forum where she brought both public and private stakeholders together. Inspired by Somali women and girls back home, she set about launching 515. Co-Operative in 2023. She is a single Mum to Sofia, 6.

Country Manager & Lead Economist
Ismail is a multilingual developmental economist and business strategist. He has a particular focus on economic development in fragile states. He has worked as part of teams launching national leading Somali banks like SomBank and Premier Bank – as well as working to bring in and roll out MasterCard and other payment services. Ismail is a proud Girl Dad and believes that no girl should be left behind in Somalia. Alongside his work at 515. Co-Operative, Ismail mentors internally displaced young Somali entrepreneurs and helps them raise capital through micro-financing.
